Dental sealants are thin protective coatings placed on the chewing surfaces of certain teeth, particularly the back teeth, where grooves and pits can make cleaning more difficult.
The sealant creates a protective barrier over these areas, helping prevent food particles and bacteria from accumulating in the grooves and reducing the risk of tooth decay.
Sealants can be especially beneficial for children as their permanent molars erupt. However, whether a sealant is appropriate depends on the individual tooth and the patient's needs.
Sealants do not replace brushing, flossing, regular dental visits, or other preventive care. Instead, they provide an additional layer of protection against cavities.
Ask our dental team whether sealants may be beneficial for your child.
