Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. When the pulp becomes inflamed or infected because of deep decay, trauma, cracks, or other causes, treatment may be necessary to save the tooth.
Root canal treatment involves removing the affected pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the tooth, and then sealing the space to help protect it from further infection.
The purpose of root canal treatment is to preserve the natural tooth whenever appropriate, relieve symptoms associated with the affected pulp, and restore the tooth's function.
Not every toothache requires a root canal. A dental examination and, when necessary, X-rays help the dentist determine the cause of the problem and the appropriate treatment.
